How to tell if a slot machine is ready to hit

Short answer
On a normal slot machine you cannot tell, because every spin is random and does not depend on the last one. There is no hot machine and no due machine. The exception is games that show carried over value on the screen: a must-hit-by meter close to its ceiling, or a persistent state game left close to a bonus. That visible state is the only real sign.
Why normal slots never tell you
Each spin is picked by a random number generator the moment you press the button. A machine that just paid a jackpot can pay again on the next spin, and a machine that has not paid in hours is no closer to paying. Signs people swear by, like sounds, near misses, or how long a machine has been cold, carry no information.
The signs that are real
