Short answer
Advantage play on slot machines means only playing a machine when something visible on its screen tips the value toward you, and walking away from every machine where it does not. It works only on certain games: ones with must-hit-by progressives, or persistent state games that carry meters, symbols or bonuses from one player to the next. On a regular slot there is no advantage to find.
Why most slots cannot be beaten
A regular slot machine picks every spin at random and is set to keep a share of what goes in. In Nevada, slot machines kept 7.15 percent of the money played statewide in 2025, according to the UNLV Center for Gaming Research. Nothing about the last spin tells you anything about the next one, so there is no pattern, no hot machine and no due machine.
The games where it can work

How advantage players actually spend their time
Mostly walking. They look at a lot of machines and play very few. Each game has a point where the value on screen is worth the cost of playing it out, and below that point the right move is to leave. That is why Jay's line is that a walk is a play: skipping a machine that is not ready is part of the strategy, not a failure of it.
Even when a machine is past its line, results swing hard. A favorable state can still lose, often. Advantage play is about making better choices over many sessions, not about any one spin.
